Five years ago Brazilian-born author and social entrepreneur Julie Catterson Lindahl discovered that her grandfather was a member of the SS in occupied Poland, 1939-45. In her presentation she reveals her journey of discovery, her meetings with eyewitnesses and victims of her grandfather’s violence, and the long and difficult process of coming to grips with a complex family history and the consequences for herself. She considers why it is important for today’s generations to work with the past, to ask questions and not to accept that there are secrets which cannot be discussed.
